2026 Drought & Hay Support Fund

This year, we are facing severe drought conditions, reduced irrigation water, and projected hay prices that may nearly double.

Because we are a small herd share and not a conventional dairy, we generally do not qualify for federal drought assistance for the milk cows the way larger agricultural operations often can. When irrigation water is cut, pasture is short, and hay prices climb, there is not usually a relief program stepping in to help cover the difference.

That cost lands directly on the farm.

Several members have asked how they can help support us beyond their regular milk purchase, so we are adding a voluntary hay support option to the member store.

This is not required, and there is absolutely no pressure to contribute. Your regular herd share already matters deeply and helps keep this farm going every month. This fund is simply a way for families who are able, and who feel called to help a little more during a difficult season, to do so in a direct and meaningful way.

We do not have to have this funding to continue operating, but it would give us a much-needed cushion if conditions continue to tighten and the hay situation does not improve. Extra support now helps us stay ahead of winter feed costs, protect the milk cows, and keep our farm more stable through an unpredictable year.

For context, our milk cows go through roughly 3 tons of hay per week. Hay is projected to cost around $300 per ton this year, which means it takes about $900 per week just to keep hay in front of the milk cows.

All hay support funds will go directly toward purchasing hay for the milk cows.

Thank you for caring about the animals, the land, the milk, and the small farm behind the food in your refrigerator. We are grateful for every family who supports us, whether that is through your regular herd share, your meat and egg purchases, kind words, shared posts, or extra hay support when you are able.
